  • SF Filipino Cultural Center 814 Mission St. San Francisco, CA, 94103 (map)

Join Us For Kuntau-Sug with Jacob Ira on September 18!

Pangalay Circle centers around workshops and in-person dance circles. We hope to connect community members with seasoned practitioners who specialize in Pangalay dances. These local practitioners would serve as the bridge between students and Indigenous culture bearers- channeling movement and lessons through workshops as well as facilitating dialogue through online platforms.

HOW TO JOIN

Class will be held both ONLINE and IN-PERSON.

For in person participants

Being an avid reader and historian, Jacob became a core member of Bayani Art in 2011 and was part of some of the most iconic projects that Bayani Art have ever created. As a steward of the pre-colonial writing system of the Philippines, known as Baybayin- Jacob has also contributed his knowledge and work to his kababayans, most notably Prof. E.J.R. David who wrote Brown Skin White Minds: Filipino -/American Post Colonial Psychology in which he served as Prof. David’s teacher and consultant in incorporating Baybayin in the book. A perennial student, Jacob continues to learn from other teachers and continues to tap in in his own creativity in order to progress the art of his ancestors. He begun the concept of Pagpatuloy which means continuation or continuity to continue the legacy of those who have gone before him.

His most recent venture, is learning the spiritualism and culture of the Tausug. He hopes to serve as the bridge for the Tausug people in the Philippines in order to promote the culture and spiritualism of the Tausug to the world by working closely with his brother and teacher, Suharto S. Asdal.
