SAMMAY Productions Presents Tuluyan, a Filipinx Healing Summit
On Saturday, August 6, join us for a screening of ritual for thrivation no. 2 followed by a Q+A with the cast and crew. On Sunday, August 7, we will feature a workshop "Daluyan: Embodiment as Birthright" by SAMMAY, followed by a sound healing bath by queer Pinay music-duo AstraLogik.
Tuluyan is a Filipino word with multiple meanings. For this gathering, we center tuluyan as a safe haven, a guest house, a place one must be welcomed into and hopefully asked to stay longer (if we are good guests). For migratory peoples, tuluyan is a sense of moving between homes, staying with friends and family temporarily, as needed due to personal, sociopolitical, or economic circumstances. Tuluyan is an integral part of our diasporic network - for we find home in many places, throughout the globe, and have learned to cultivate home in many ways as a people of multiple narratives, histories, and lineages.
Tuluyan is also a reminder of continuation, as we are living in disparate and desperate times. The COVID-19 global pandemic continues to have the most consequences on BIPOC communities, as BIPOC communities continue to experience rampant racialized, gender, and state-sanctioned violence daily. The overturning of Roe v. Wade brings to light just how far we still are, still struggling to understand sovereignty and autonomy, still thinking we have any right to another person’s body and their choices for their life. For those of the Philippine diaspora, we are beset with another set of challenges, as we face the reality of another Marcos dictatorship happening in one’s lifetime. Amidst and despite, we must continue. Padayon.
We hope these offerings provide a moment of respite, replenishment, and an opportunity to re-member the destinies that course through our veins. This work of collective healing and liberation is lifelong and intergenerational. May we continue to weave the threads that will sustain us for the long haul work. May what we weave continue past our lifetimes, like the basket that has survived generations and oceans and stories and whispers and cries and so much that we cannot name but feel in the depth of our spirits …
We look forward to receiving you on Saturday, August 6th and Sunday, August 7th at Kapwa Gardens in the heart of SOMA Pilipinas Cultural District, on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional lands of the Ramaytush Ohlone.
