We strive to play traditional kulintang that is beyond reproach even as we enjoy mastering original compositions.  We perform the traditional kulintang music passed down by the late Master Danongan Kalanduyan with fidelity, while also exploring with joy and courage how this music can express itself through new ways that are nourished by our own specific context on this American soil.

LEGACY FMA

Legacy Filipino Martial Arts is a weapons-based martial arts system that pulls from both modern and traditional Filipino Martial Arts. We use sticks, knives, swords, as well as empty hand combat. Within the art, we incorporate striking, disarming of weapons, joint locking techniques, and takedowns. Classes in Daly City and SF we offer classes for Youth and Adults

Parangal Dance Company

Parangal’s mission is to give tribute to Philippine heritage by preserving and promoting ethnic attire, music, and dance through research, workshops, and performances. We aim to serve as a bridge, inspiring and connecting Filipino Americans to their roots to give them a sense of pride and identity, while educating diverse communities to foster awareness and appreciation of Philippine culture.

Likha

Founded in 1992 as a performing group by Rudi Soriano, LIKHA believes in the power of dance and music to share the beauty of Philippine culture. LIKHAhas grown into a non-profit folk arts organization with a diverse breadth of programs and performances, representing the Philippines in over 10 international festivals. LIKHA continually expands its repertoire and maintains authentic costuming, props, and instruments—by researching, developing, and nurturing relationships with diverse communities throughout the Philippines.

Jan Patrick Luce

Jan Luce began his dance journey with his Pilipino club “Kababayan” back in high school where he was introduced to Brian Batugo and the Little Manila Dance Collective. This encounter sparked his passion for cultural dance that was further fanned by his involvement in Pilipino Cultural Nights as a producer and choreographer with Kilusan Pilipino of University of the Pacific. It was these experiences that led Jan to Parangal where he’s been fortunate enough to meet Eric Solano, Jonathan Mercado, and Kim Requesto who continuously encourage and inspire him to push the boundaries of dance and learning. Jan would like to give a huge thank you to his friends and family for the unconditional support and for all the opportunities he’s received to explore and experiment.

Matt Espina Harris

Matthew Espina Harris is a musician based in San Francisco. He got his start in Philippine-inspired dance and music through Pilipino Culture Night, where he fell in love with Kulintang and Rondalla. Matt is a proud member of the American Center of Philippine Arts (ACPA) as part of their music ensemble and serves as an advisor to numerous collegiate Fil-Am organizations in NorCal. He is a student of traditional Kulintang music, learning from performing groups like House of Gongs, Little Manila, Kulintang Dialect, and Salamindanao Dance Company. While in college, Matt established one of the only student-run, traditionally based Kulintang ensembles in the United States through Mga Kapatid at UC Davis. In 2022, Matt formally joined the artistic team of Parangal, and works as a music lead to strengthen the company’s Kulintang and Rondalla repertoires. He is also the owner and operator of PamanaTreasures, an online store that aims to bridge diasporic interest in tangible heritage with the growing movement in support of Philippine artisans.

FREE + ONLINE | balay (Home) Cooking Demos: Kimchi Kinilaw with Chef AC

This month, Kapwa Gardens is partnering with Balay Kreative and SOMCAN to host Balay (Home) Cooking, a FREE online demo series which showcases a new guest chef and healthy Filipino dish every month that viewers can recreate from home!

Join us from the comfort (and safety) of home.

We invite you to tune in and follow along to the April edition of Balay (Home) Cooking, which features Chef AC Boral, the mastermind behind Baba’s House Kitchen, an up-and-coming rice bowl eatery in Oakland! Streaming from Kapwa Gardens, he’ll be teaching us how to make Kimchi Kilawin!

With safety in mind, this event will be streamed live to a remote audience via Zoom. Follow along and cook from your kitchen, or, simply watch and learn!

ABOUT THE DISH

Kimchi Kilawin is a fusion twist to the traditional Filipino dish. Kinilaw is a fresh and tangy raw seafood dish native to the Philippines, which uses vinegar and fruit juices to “cook” its ingredients, often comparable to ceviche. Here, Chef AC will prepare a variation of this dish called kilawin. The primary difference between “kinilaw” and “kilawin” is that kilawin can be cooked, while kinilaw is “cooked” by curing in acidic ingredients. No kinilaw or kilawin looks the same. Traditionally, it is composed of the local catch specific to one’s region, with varying add-ons and garnishes. Though, here, Chef AC turns to the popular Korean ingredient of kimchi, fermented and seasoned cabbage, as a standout feature of this recipe.

To RSVP and learn more about the event, chef, and recipe, please visit the official event page from Balay Kreative.

Full instructions and ingredients are also provided for your convenience.

Happy cooking, we’ll we hope to see you there!

Meet Your Coach

RJ ACOSTA

While going to college and working for a big box gym, I found MMA. I fell in love with the sport. The idea that a highly skilled smaller opponent can defeat a much larger opponent intrigued me.

After a while, I thought it was time for me to put my skills to the test. I fought for Gladiator Challenge at Thunder Valley Casino and won via 2nd round arm-triangle choke.

After the fight, I realized that although I loved competing, what I enjoyed the most was the community I've built around sports. From there, I shifted my focus to helping others become the most badass version of themselves. I've worked with everyone from pro fighters, to people recovering from spinal cord injuries to weight loss clients to busy c level executives, and of course the weekend warrior. My ideal client is anyone who has a good attitude and wants to better themselves.

Classes

2/6 Bahala Na Escrima

In the Giron System, Estilo Macabebe is the style of using double sticks/double weapons. It is to honor the town of Macabebe and its people. Though they were hired to fight for the Spanish, the Macabebe people were fierce warriors and known for their use of double weapons. For our session, we will work on what's called our Sinawali drill, where the students can attack & defend while advancing and retreating. Then we will explore Macabebe footwork, mindset and movements from Angles #1-5.

2/13 Derobio Eskrima with Maestro Alvin Albano

Mandala Mandirigma’s Doble Cada techniques apply Derobio’s passing concepts in the context of double weapons such as two sticks or two swords.

Students will work on developing ambidexterity and coordination during partner drills using rattan sticks, as well as seeing real life application of concepts.

2/20 ESKABO Daan with Master Joseph Bautista

Joseph will be showing double stick patterns known as a sinawali and show how they can be used and translated in empty hand application for self-defense.

2/27 VSCK Eskrima with Guro Gregory Manalo & Guro Jasper Jay Pugao

Maestro Sonny Umpad innovated several ways to utilize the double stick. Most notable is the "inside roll," where a practitioner delivers strikes from the inside guard instead of the more commonly used six-count sinawali from the outside. Wing Chun's centerline chain-punching inspires the concept. Sonny's other innovation, the "fulcrum strikes," is where a practitioner generates tremendous spring-loaded power by creating fulcrums from either stick or limb.

The goal is to get students to drill both inside and outside roll sinawali's, utilize gunting or scissor blocks, and apply the deceivingly powerful fulcrum strikes. Students will start with drills and progress to an improvised free-flow. Prior single stick experience is helpful but not necessary.

San Francisco Girls Chorus is proud to launch a community book club series centered around Tomorrow’s Memories: A Diary by Angeles Monrayo, the true diary of Monrayo, a Filipina girl who immigrated to Hawaii and California in the 1920’s.

San Francisco Girls Chorus’s Community book club series is centered around Tomorrow’s Memories: A Diary by Angeles Monrayo, the true diary of Monrayo, a Filipina girl who immigrated to Hawaii and California in the 1920’s. The diary is the inspiration of our newly commissioned choral-opera by Matthew Welch. Leading up to the premiere of Tomorrow’s Memories in June of 2022, each month we will host a group discussion led by a variety of leaders, field experts, and community members about topics relating to Filipino heritage, immigration, music history, and more. These sessions serve as an opportunity to discuss the intersection of history and art making.

Derobio Eskrima is a sword-based art that seeks to redirect incoming aggression as well as neutralize the intention to harm. As a cultural martial art with deep history, it is handed down to future generations for use in self-defense and self-enrichment. Students first learn the movements with sticks, but the bladed concepts can also be applied to the use of improvised items as well as unarmed defense. Derobio is also known for its many locks and disarms.

It was founded in Cebu City, and its original name was the Balintawak Self Defense Club, where it was originally taught. The club took its name from the street of its location, Balintawak Street, where the original Balintawak masters trained. I recieved my Master's certification under Grand Master Ver Villasin, the son of Grand Master Jose Villasin, one of Anciong Bacon's original students.
